The Worst Advice in Personal Finance and Personal Development
I need the industry to stop pushing this idea of working 16 hour days building businesses, because “if you truly wanted it, you would work even harder.”
I bought into this belief and my nervous system went bezerk because it didn't feel safe. My depression worsened and all I wanted was to take my life 80% of the time.
I hold space for many women who are now healing from this.
This is just a recipe for burnout and depression. Our mental health can't take this.
We deserve a different narrative because the truth is most of the White boys who followed this narrative and worked from their couches and garages had parents who were financially stable and didn't have whole families depending on them.
Stop pushing this dangerous narrative.
All it does is make poverty a moral issue (it's not, it's systemic) and makes it seem like people who are struggling financially are not willing to work non stop and go broke and lose friends all to make money.
The choice is literally: lose human connection or make money. It's either/or and we expect people to feel safe when faced with this option.
How?
Why?
Make this make sense on a nervous system and an amygdala level Lort.
Just reading this advice that you have to be willing to work non stop and lose friends in order to have success, will make your nervous system go into fight or flight because of how humans are naturally wired. It can literally make you feel/fall sick and even lead to early death.
Ask any doctor.
Also many people around the world work like crazy, are sleep deprived AND broke and have actually lost friends because of this, because being overworked and sleep deprived literally leads to low EQ and crappy relationships so I would say people are ticking these boxes for success and coming up short.
The system is broken. Stop blaming people for not being successful in a messed up system that only wants to reward us with trauma.
