I was in my early twenties when a man made me quit my job and life in London to live in Trinidad with him (we knew each other and had dated for a while when we both lived in Florida, USA). At the time South Africans needed visas for Trinidad (we no longer do) and he organized all that, so I thought this is real and I trusted him.
I recently told a friend that in addition to spending most of the pandemic catching sunsets and sitting on my balcony eating or sipping peppermint tea, I now spend a lot of my evenings watching birds and observing their behavior and letting my mind wander.
There’s a money myth that a lot of people, in particular South Africans, buy into and believe.
That myth is that moving to another country will change you finances and lead to financial freedom.
I bought into this myth as well and it shaped my life.
I started traveling and living abroad right after graduation in 2005 because I believed that's what would lead to financial freedom.
When I started tantra yoga, I'd only done vinyasa yoga and ashtanga yoga and was focused on being in the poses and looking awesome as I do them.
I'd force myself into poses and now I have to challenge myself to relax in a pose and feel into my body, which changed my life.
But not before I almost lost my mind crying everyday when I was getting my yoga teaching certificate in Goa, India and then had all sorts of ancestral and deep childhood memories surface.
Day 5 was my favourite day of the retreat - it was the day of hiking, sweat lodges and full moon fire ceremonies...it was magic.
It was also the day I got to teach my work and some healing things I learned from my mother.
We started the day with tantra yoga, meditation and breakfast as usual.
