When Having Money Causes Discomfort Or Makes Us Feel Uncomfortable

We often assume that lack of money is what causes us discomfort and anxiety.

But the truth is for some people, having money can be as uncomfortable and as distressing as having no money.

What happens when having money causes us discomfort or makes us feel uncomfortable?

I used to have panic attacks at the mere thought of handling money or having money in my bank account. I couldn’t rest until I’d spent the money or gotten rid of it in some way.

Some people are visibly uncomfortable with having money, whilst others seem excited at the prospect of having money, so their discomfort looks like excitement - they spend money as fast as it comes in. They’ll even say things like - I love money, I love spending money, I love having money.

It isn’t excitement that makes them spend money so recklessly, it’s the discomfort of having money in their bank account or wallet.

Most people also confuse nervousness with excitement, because they have the same physiological response. I see this often with clients and students - they claim to be excited at the prospect of having or making more money, when all they really are is just nervous.

They only realize this when they start sitting with their emotions around money.

It's not about the amount of money we carry or have sitting in the bank, it’s about money in general.

Unfortunately for most of us, our awareness of our discomfort about having money, only becomes obvious to us when we have large amounts of money.

How do we know that we’re uncomfortable with having money?

1. The minute we have more money than usual, people start asking us for money

I can’t explain how this happens, because it also happens to me - as soon as we increase our income and make more money, we may actually find ourselves suddenly inundated with requests for financial help from different people (family, friends, charities and even strangers).

This is often because we’ve just gone beyond our financial set point, so there’s a part of us that gets rid of money by attracting people who need money.

Perfect way to get rid of money without blaming ourselves and feeling bad.

2. Emergencies

When we feel uncomfortable with something, we want to get as far away from it as possible or we want to get rid of it.

A great way to get rid of money is to manifest emergencies, that way we don’t have to feel resentful towards anyone or even say no to anyone.

3. You feel physically uneasy but there’s no reason for it

I tell all my clients and students the same thing: the body never lies.

Sometimes we don’t connect the sensations in our body with our discomfort because they seem unrelated. How can having money, cause a headache or a pain in your womb or your hip?

We don’t make that connection because money and the body seem unrelated. But if having money causes us some kind of emotional distress, that emotional distress will show up as a physical ailment in the body.
