Start Where You are, with the Resources You have

Soo there is something that has always fascinated me - people who email and message me when they see a grammar error or any error in my work.

Usually these are people who have never emailed or messaged me when all is well with my work.

Or they’ve gotten some value from my work.

They have never said: wow, thank you for that email or video, it really spoke to me.

But when they see a misspelled word or even feel like the quality of the podcasts or the videos is not up to scratch I get emails and inboxes.

I find this fascinating because I have a working theory about such people.

This happens often because I make a lot of errors and the only reason anything in #WealthyMoney is so polished because of my team. I have a great team. If I was left to my own devices, it would be a hot mess.

You get better at doing things, by taking action

1) When we started the podcast, Mizo Rainmaker and I agreed that we would start it in February  2020, when we had done our research and learned all we could about podcasts

About 2 weeks later in September 2019 (I think), I woke up and told her we should start the podcast and do it imperfectly, with our terrible wifi and not so great audio, because we could learn on the job as we built the platform.

And that's what's been happening. We're not perfect but we’re constantly improving and our audience tells us they download the podcast and listen to the same episodes 2 or 3 times a week.

And we dance and celebrate and get excited because this was the intention we had.

2) When I started my Facebook Live videos, I had someone email to tell me how ugly they were

She wrote me a whole essay to tell me how I needed a professional videographer and to just be more professional if I was gonna talk about money. She told me I had to look moneyed.

And she ended the email by reminding me how ugly the video was and that I should keep the message short.

I doubted myself for weeks until people started emailing me, asking me when the next live videos were happening.

I realized that those people were busy listening to the content and were feeling my vibes and not seeing the "ugliness".

Of course over time the quality of my videos improved a lot. I learned about lighting, background and got a great phone. And I did better.

Even my photos became more professional. I do photo shoots and I work with great branding and marketing people.

I improved and I am still improving.

3) After the live videos I got bolder and started doing my crazy travel videos where I spin in circles and basically show my personality

Some people messaged me to tell me to stop and to hire a professional person to shoot my travel videos.

And I was triggered all over again and doubted myself all over again.

But guess what?

Those crazy travel videos launched the #WealthyMoney retreats. When I meet my tribe in person they laugh about how hilarious my crazy travel videos are, how I spin in circles and try to record everything in a chaotic manner.

But they love the videos because they think they are hilarious and most of the people that watch these videos end up being my clients and signing up for my courses, coaching or retreats.

Those are the people that cross countries to come do the work and be in community with others that are doing the #WealthyMoney work.

The truth is I am easily excited by random things and I like sharing that excitement in the moment; I am not sure if a curated and professionally recorded video would have captured the excitement.

What I have learned on my travels is that we don't have to be perfect to get started or to build a business

My favorite restaurant in Sri Lanka doesn't have printed menus; it is a tiny hole in the wall with a lot of charm. The place is always packed because the food is so good, no one cares that the menus are handwritten with tons of spelling errors.

In fact, that's part of why we go there.

I took my sister there and she loved it. We spoke about the food, the ambiance and how they made use of art to decorate the space, for days on end, not once did we talk about the menus and the grammar errors.

Of course we want to be better at what we do, but the fear of not being perfect all the time shouldn't stop us.

We will still find our tribe and they will love our work despite our imperfections or maybe because of them.
